Integral Mean Value Theorem

The integral mean value theorem connects an integral’s value with the function’s value at some point.

If $f(x)$ is continuous on $[a,b]$ , then there exists $\xi \in [a,b]$ such that

$\int_a^b f(x) \, dx = f(\xi)(b-a)$

Geometry: There is a rectangle with area equal to the curvilinear trapezoid; its height is $f(\xi)$ .

例： $f(x)=x^2$ on $[0,1]$ , find $\xi$ .
$\int_0^1 x^2 dx = \tfrac13 = \xi^2 \Rightarrow \xi=\tfrac{1}{\sqrt{3}}\approx 0.577$ .

用积分中值定理求 $f(x)=x$ 在 $[0,2]$ 的 $\xi$ 。

参考答案

思路： $\int_0^2 x dx = 2$ ，故 $2 = \xi \cdot 2$ ， $\xi=1$ 。
答案： $\xi = 1$ 。
